MEN'S GOLF OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

The 16th China Men's Amateur
Golf Open Championship organized by China Golf Association,
Guangdong Golf Association, Richtone Worldwide Ltd. and WuYi
Fountain Palm Golf Club is going to held at WuYi Golf Club
Jiangmen starting from tomorrow until Nov. 4, 2001. Over 130
players from six countries will be competed in this tournament.
The first two days are a pre-qualifying competition and 65
players will be selected to the last two days' qualifying
game.
China Men's Amateur Open had been held for 15 years since
1986, was treated as a stepping stone of all the golf professionals
in China. The first tournament in 1986 was mostly participated
by foreigners as only 4 golf clubs were opened in China at
that time. Chinese golfers mainly came from the staff working
at the four golf clubs. However, the talented Chinese golfers
still could step ahead very quickly among many foreign golfers
like Zheng Wen Jun won the trophy in 1988.
The victory of Zheng Wen Jun stimulated the other Chinese
golfers to compete in the later years' tournament with ten
times winning among the following 12 years. Zhang Lian Wei
– the China top ranked golfer, was a three times' winner of
the tournament. His victory record also included many international
events like Macau Open 2001. The second name to mention is
Zheng Jun who was a two times winner of China Amateur Open
and also the first Chinese golfer to win the Volvo China Open
in 1997 with over US$400,000.00 prize money. The new generation-
Liang Wen Zhong and Huang Yong Huan are crowned at the most
potential new blood.
Now, over 100 golf clubs have been opened in China. Many
talented young golfers are paying the best effort to make
their dream of " China No. 1" come true. With the
rapid growth of golf sports in China, this year's championship
will come out a surprise results of the Chinese amateur golfer
or not. We'll wait and see!
This year's tournament will be including the participation
of Chinese Taipei team who had just won the 5th place in the
Nomura Cup. One of this strong team member, Chang Hong Wei
had shot a record of total 278 with 10 par under. With the
advantage of the experience being gained from Nomura Cup,
Chinese Taipei team members were treated as the potential
winner of this year's championship. The four young golfers
of the China team playing in the Nomura Cup also participated
in the championship.
The tournament was sponsored by Wanasport Co. Ltd. and Putting
Green Co. Ltd.The host venue – WuYi Fountain Palm Golf Club,
Jiangmen China is a golf and property project invested by
Hong Kong & Macau celebrity Dr. Stanley Ho. The project
includes a 27-hole golf course designed by Nicklaus Design
and a clubhouse. The property-WuYi Garden has sold out its
first and second phase villas and apartments which had been
a famous brand name in the Jiangmen City.
